REVIEW OF
TYLER PERRY’S THE FAMILY THAT PREYS

I went to see Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys its second weekend out and, boy, was I glad I did.
I’ve been a fan of Tyler Perry’s work since I saw Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I love everything he puts out. True, some parts of his movies are a little over the top, but the deeper message he weaves in, and how he handles tough situations allows plenty of room to overlook that. And you have to laugh.
In this movie, you have two matriarchs, Alice and Charlotte (played by Alfre Woodard and Kathy Bates, respectively), who have been friends for 30 years. While they set off together on a cross-country road trip, their grown children are at home preying upon one another. One really sticky situation is at the center of the plot.
This is one of Perry’s more serious movies, and although there aren’t any of his trademark laugh-out-loud situations, it does have its comedic moments. Bottom line: Pure Perry.
If you like Alfre Woodard or Kathy Bates, or if you are a Tyler Perry fan, and even if you’re not, I think it’s worth your time and money to see The Family That Preys.
