REVIEW OF

THE MIDDLE (TV Show)

I know this is coming a little late in the season, and a few years late, but I didn’t begin to watch this show in the first season.

As a Christian who looks for wholesome television shows that don’t try to force their politically correct opinions on viewers, ABC’s The Middle is one such show. The Heck’s are a goofy, clueless, and sort of dysfunctional family. At the same time, they are funny, cute, and loveable. Did I mention funny?

The cast of this show are stunning in the parts they portray. They are as follows:

Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton)
Mike Heck (Neil Flynn)
Axl Heck (Charlie McDermott)
Sue Heck (Eden Sher)
Brick Heck (Atticus Shaffer)

Frankie, the mom, is a neurotic. She worries about everything, even the insignificant. Mike, the dad, on the other hand, worries about nothing—or seems not to. Both these characters, as well as the actors, play off one another really well. They come off as uncaring parents, but, when the chips are down, will go out of their way to make sure things work out for their kids, and the general good of the family unit.

Axl, the oldest son, is lazy with schoolwork, but a terrific football player. He sees himself as a suave know-it-all, until something drastic happens to knock him off his high horse.

Sue is a happy-go-lucky optimist who lets her true self shine through (a nutty self). She is the girl who turns tragedy into triumph.

And Brick. I don’t know why he’s been named Brick, except that he is different. Very different. He’s special (but they never call him disabled), and brilliant. Loves to read ALL the time. But he doesn’t know how to make friends, and fares better interacting with adults. Has a few tics, like lowering his head and whispering a word or phrase to his own body that he’s just spoken out loud. Brick has also recently developed the act of saying “whoop,” now and then. Make no mistake, though; in no way is this show making fun of individuals, or a group of individuals, who may exhibit any of these habits.

If you’re looking for an innovative, clean, fun television show, then The Middle is for you. I like it so much, I wish the network would extend it from 30 minutes to an hour viewing time.
