REVIEW OF
AN IRISHWOMAN’S TALE
By Deborah M. Piccurelli
An Irishwoman’s Tale is a haunting novel based on a true story and filled with lush descriptions of the Irish countryside, as well as the US. I was immediately drawn into Mary Freeman’s story.
Mary’s earliest memory has disturbed her since childhood: An old oak table, bitter faces drinking cheap tea, and a heated discussion of what’s to be done with the “little eejit.” Young Mary was the “eejit” in question. It turns out that she was torn from her native Ireland and sent to live in the United States. As a married woman, Mary takes on many fulfilling roles, but her loneliness and torment remain as acute as ever.
A family crisis propels Mary back to her childhood home in County Clare, Ireland, where her tragic past is unveiled, and she is forced to reckon with God.
Author, Patti Lacy, masters the art of storytelling her first time out. That, combined with her finely drawn characters moved me to the point that I couldn’t stop reading. I longed to see an end to Mary’s tragedy.
This book is a must read!
