REVIEW OF
THE UNLIKELY WIFE
BY DEBRA ULLRICK
Debra Ullrick, who is one of my very favorite authors, always creates unique heroines. I have read every one of her books (of which I love all), and they’re always full of surprises.
In The Unlikely Wife, Michael Bowen looks forward to meeting his new bride, to whom he’d married by proxy. But she’s not quite what he expected. Instead of a sweet, genteel woman, Selina Farliegh Bowen is a trouser-wearing, rifle-toting one who looks like a female outlaw. Somehow he’s married the wrong woman! But Selina had fallen in love with Michael through his letters, even though she couldn’t read them herself. She’d had them read to her by a friend, who also wrote back to Michael for her. But this friend left things out about Selina, and added others that made Michael’s dream wife nothing like her. Selina won’t change who she is for anyone, so Michael is stuck with her. Or could this union turn out to be just what he needed?
I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. Though, I didn’t think it was possible—because it was excellent from the beginning—Debra’s prose has gotten even better. The careful attention to historical detail has me learning about new things I never even thought of. And the dialogue is spot on, in my opinion. If you like historical romance, you will definitely like this book. I highly recommend it (as you can see).
