LETTING GO AND LETTING GOD
BY
DEBORAH M. PICCURELLI
Usually, what’s uppermost in people’s minds at the start of November is Thanksgiving, and even Christmas. Not this year, though. Right now, the presidential election stirs everyone’s thoughts and emotions. For me, the reason is that I simply don’t feel comfortable voting for either candidate.
As a Christian, I’m adamant about voting against anyone who believes in abortion, fetal experimentation, and embryonic stem cell research. Okay, that totally eliminates one candidate. Voting should be easy, now, right? Wrong. I don’t trust in the remaining candidate’s abilities or policies, so how can I confidently vote for him?
I think many people feel as I do. Some are even creating “what if” scenarios in frantic emails that focus on the imminent destruction of our country, should the wrong party take office. It’s easy to get caught up in the insanity of it all. But there’s an undeniable truth I hold in my heart that can easily be crowded out by such worries. When they are, I have a wise friend who gently reminds me that God is sovereign. The person who He has ordained to be our president will certainly be the one chosen by the people on November 4th. No ifs, ands, or buts. This was evidenced in the last two elections.
That said, there’s still the dilemma of how to vote. My conclusion is that I should simply vote for the one whose views are closest to mine; the lesser of two evils, so to speak. Then I’ll hope and pray about the outcome. Beyond that, I need to let go and let God take care of the rest.
