Most of us know or think we know what love is. We learn and experience different kinds of love as we grow. First, the love of our parents; that knowing that we’re cared for no matter what we do, good or bad. Then there’s the love of a sibling; that sister or brother will stick by your side through every obstacle you encounter with a solidarity like no other. And, of course, there’s the love of a spouse; the one we search for all our lives, until we find it; the one that makes us feel like a missing piece of ourselves has finally been found, and makes us complete.
There are lots more types of love, but which is the greatest? As many of us know, that would be the love of God. But not everyone knows it, because not everyone knows God.
So how do we know God loves us? He tells us in His Word, the Bible. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” And Jesus, after telling us to love one another as he loves us, said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” We are His friends if we do what he commanded: to love one another.
But still is reading what He tells us enough? It should be, but He doesn’t leave us with that. There’s the matter of the crucifixion. If condemning your only son to death for the likes of a sinful humanity isn’t proof of God’s love, I don’t know what is. And we can be sure of Jesus’ love, as He went willingly to the cross. What other love is greater than these?
So, my friends, cloaked in the love of God, and His Son, Jesus, I wish you the happiest of Easters.
