AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE SUTTON
This month, bestselling author, Michelle Sutton is back to talk about two of her many currently and to-be-released books.
Welcome back, Michelle! You know I’m always thrilled to have you here.
Michelle, you have about five novels releasing over the next year. Have you been writing like crazy, or were all of these books part of your cachet of completed manuscripts?
Most of the books are already written. So it's not a problem. I write fast.
In Plain Sight released in April of this year. Will you tell us about it?
This story is about Bojan's younger sister from Danger at the Door. She comes to live with him in Arizona and speaks little English. She knows nothing of American customs so she has a lot to learn…like who you can trust and what is safe.
I haven’t yet read ALL of your books, but three of them that I have feature characters speaking with foreign accents, which I love. Any special reason you like to use these characters?
I think foreign accents are sexy and fun to write. Plus, communication errors always make for comical moments in romance.
Why do you suppose you do foreign-accented characters so well?
I pick particular phrases or wording for certain languages and stick with it. When they do speak in their native tongue I have the grammar correct but in English for the reader. Then when they speak English I have it wrong again so you always know when they are trying to speak English with their accent pushing through it. You can hear them talking in your head.
What did you like about Jovana so much that made you want to write about her?
Jovana was talked into running away from home by a man who was abusive. She was fifteen. He used her and hurt her and I wanted to see her heal after all she had been through. I wanted to get her far away from her country and give her a new experience with a nice guy, just to see how she'd react to his love.
In one interview, you stated that young women who seem like man hunters may have way more going on than we can see on the surface. Besides trying to control their situations for fear of being hurt, what other signs can people look for to know that these women have been trapped in bad relationships in the past?
As soon as things start to seem good or happy, they tend to do something to push the person away who is the best person for them. As one person put it, for these folks they feel scared in safe relationships because they are waiting for the abuse to begin. They understand dysfunction, but unconditional love baffles them.
Another one of your e-books, First Love, released this month. Will you share a little about that one?
This story is about two high school lovers who parted ways when the hero became a Christian and left for college. They meet up again four years later and the heroine is still hurting from his abandonment, but has since become a Christian herself. The hero feels guilty for dumping her but he didn't know how to tell her to her face that he couldn't sleep with her anymore, so he just left. Now they are in the same town together and in the same acting group. Both of them still have feelings for the other, but neither knows how to have a romantic relationship without the physical aspect since that was what they had in common when they had dated before.
This is book two in the Tombstone Treasures series. How did you come up with the role-playing concept for the series? Does such a place exist in the real world?
I decided back in 2003 after going to Tombstone and seeing the people there acting in skits and dressing up like people from the 1800s that it would be fun to write about their lives outside of their acting roles.
Will there be any more books in this series?
Yes, one more. It's titled First Response and I'm writing it right now.
Michelle, thank you so much for stopping back to tell us about these novels. It’s always a pleasure to have you, and please come again for some of the many books you have releasing on the horizon.
Since the two books discussed here are e-books, this month’s drawing is for one of Michelle’s paperback books, Never Without Hope. If you’d like to win an autographed copy, use my Contact page and type “drawing” in the comments box. The deadline to enter the drawing is October 24th.
