Please join me in welcoming Laura Hilton, my featured author for this month. She’s had a story published in an anthology called “Second Chance Brides.”
Welcome, Laura! It’s a pleasure to interview you for our readers.
Thank you! It’s a pleasure to be here!
How did the theme for “Second Chance Brides,” come about in this anthology?
Honestly, I really don’t know. My agent contacted me and asked me if I wanted a spot, there was an author in there that had caught the publisher’s eye and they were pitching this collection. But it was a fun theme and all nine of us came up with nine different ideas.
How did you come up with your story, Married By Mistake?
I am a seat of the pants writer. I came up with names, setting, time period and started writing a sample chapter so I’d have a clue where it would go. And when I finished chapter one I had the idea and it was so fun to write! Plus it’s on Mackinac Island in Michigan – a popular tourist destination I’ve always wanted to use in a story.
What did you enjoy most about writing this story?
It was different from my norm. I usually write Amish romance, but while it uses horses and buggies and girls in dresses and kapps, it’s quite contemporary, too. And I have my favorite historical authors and I was so excited to have a few of them in this collection with me. Or rather, I was in the collection with a few of them.
What makes this story stand out from the crowd?
It was set on an island, involved little known historical facts using iron ore and the fort on the island.
Give us an interesting fun fact about Married By Mistake.
I was reading Alice in Wonderland to my youngest daughter when I wrote this (she hates to read, so I was trying to engage her in a story – and yes, it worked swell!) but some bits and pieces of Alice in Wonderland came out in the story – such as a game of croquet and “Off with his head!”
What projects are you working on at present?
I’m writing an Amish story for Whitaker House. This one is also set in Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, not on Mackinac Island.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Hopefully, more Amish stories, contemporary romances, and maybe another historical if I get an opportunity.

I like to have fun with the stories, but they aren’t a romantic comedy and I always include a strong faith message.
