Please welcome Dr. Julia Scalise, author of Do One Thing: Feel Better/Live Better – 31 Easy Tips to Improve Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual Vitality.
Dr. Scalise, please tell us a little about yourself.
I am a Holistic Health Practitioner who helps my clients eliminate underlying causes of health issues, discover ways to improve their emotional well being, attain a more positive outlook on life and find their bliss. I am a board-certified member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, and a member of the American Association of Nutritional Consultants, American Holistic Health Association, and a Certified Physiological Regulating Medicine Practitioner.
Will you share with us how you came to be interested in Holistic Health?
At a young age, I had health issues that required hospitalization for severe infections and I was treated with high doses of antibiotics. The infections were resolved, but the treatments created an internal environment that led to progressive issues of chronic fatigue, immune system dysfunction, and multiple joint arthritis. When I was told that surgery was my only option for pain relief, I prayed for answers. I found a book that addressed some of my issues from a holistic approach and in utilizing supplements and by making some changes in my diet, the pain resolved along with improvement in some of the other issues. That was enough to convince me to pursue a career change and become a Holistic Health Practitioner.
As a Doctor of Naturology, will you explain exactly what that is?
Naturology is the study of nature as it applies to the health of humankind. Nothing artificial is used. But in addition to physical well-being, Naturology also promotes emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
After 15 years of practice, you’ve written a book. Please share with us what it’s about.
Do One Thing- Feel Better/Live Better gives 31 easy and mostly cost free tips to improve all aspects of wellness. There are 9 tips for improving physical well-being, 8 tips for improving mental well-being, 7 tips for improving emotional well-being, and 7 tips for improving spiritual well-being. It shows that health and vitality is easier and less expensive than most people expect.
What prompted you to finally write this book?
I wrote the book for 3 reasons. First, many clients over the years encouraged me to share in a book, the information I imparted to them in one-on-one consultations. They found the consultations informative and wanted to pass the knowledge gained to others. Secondly, I wanted to help those who felt overwhelmed with life’s responsibilities to understand that by doing just one thing, they could begin to make improvements in their health. And thirdly, many think that living a healthier lifestyle is expensive, but I’ve shown that many of the tips in the book are cost-free.
What is different about your book than other holistic health books?
My book is a different approach in that it is not a “program” whereby you are told what to do week by week. There are 31 tips, so that you can just do one thing each day of the month for the benefit you can get for a day. Or you can pick one tip and continue for as long as you want for all the benefit it can bring to you. As healthier choices are incorporated into your lifestyle, at your own pace and discretion, you can add in any other tips as you see fit. But no matter what you do, just doing one thing will improve an aspect of your life.
What was the most difficult part of writing this book?
It was difficult to decide which tips to incorporate, and then to write the information in a way that was easy to read, to explain what the tip is and its benefit, without further overwhelming people. It was difficult to make each chapter short and concise but to give the information needed so it would make sense as to why someone would want to incorporate it into their lifestyle. And it was difficult to determine tips that would not further burden people financially yet have substantial impact on their ability to achieve their goals for wellness and vitality.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I enjoyed the excitement of getting my message out to more people. And I enjoyed the challenge of doing it according to the difficulties mentioned in my answer to your previous question.
Where can we find out more about you and your book?

I know that you were interested in ballroom dancing at one point in time. Did you ever enter competitions similar to the TV show, Dancing With the Stars?
My love for ballroom dancing is part of the reason I became a Holistic Health Practitioner and I discuss that on my website and in the book. I competed for 8 years as an amateur in many competitions. I trained and competed in American Rhythm, American Smooth, and in International Latin. Just like on Dancing with the Stars, I competed with a professional partner, and won many titles. It is a very physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging sport. Now I only dance on a social level but enjoy it all just the same.
Before you go, how about enticing us with a short excerpt from your book?
INTRODUCTION
In my 15 years in practice, I know that health and well-being are a by-product of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual vitality and balance. After working with hundreds of clients, I understand there is no one formula for everyone, but each person must find their unique and exclusive path to wellness based on their lifestyle, preferences, and genetic makeup.
I found that although I impart quite a bit of information during my consultations, not everyone can immediately undertake all that may be necessary for them to achieve their goals. In follow- up consultations, I would learn that although not all my suggestions were utilized, making even just one change, or “doing one thing”, brought benefit. I also learned in follow-up consultations that some people felt overwhelmed and therefore made no changes. When I would ask, “Could you pick one thing and work with that?” clients would agree and by the next appointment, they had already noticed benefits. Hence, the birth of the “Do One Thing” concept.
